This castle once belonged to the French author Alain Fournier. It is surrounded by moats and it has got round towers and a dungeon. It towers above a large pond. It is a fully furnished dwelling, and part of it is a museum dedicated to its former owner Alain Fournier and his famous novel « Le Grand Meaulnes ». This castle was also a home to the Princess of Boisbelle (a former enclosed territory situated in the old province of Berry).
It is open to visitors all the year round. The guide is the actual landlord who comments the visit of his dwelling where so many famous people once lived : Princess of Albret, Princess of Cleves who inspired the famous novel by Madame de La Fayette, Charles de Gonzague Prince of Boisbelle and Duke of Nevers, and last but not least the Duke of Sully who was king Henry IV‘s Prime minister, who added to the castle its beautiful terrace and also had the new capital city Henrichemont designed by the architect Salomon de Brosse.
The visit will lead you through the different rooms : the Alain Fournier museum, the display of Royal XVIIIth century Albany, the castle collections such as paintings by Murillo, della Robia, ancient furniture and tapestries…
At 10.00 a.m. on Sundays you may attend the weekly mass in the chapel.
For more than 10 years now, every first weekend of September has been dedicated to the Medieval Feast in the castle grounds; it is a highlight with its night show and day demonstrations of tilting matches, horse shows and historical medieval battles, fireworks …
